UAE, October 28, 2025 – The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai have announced a major update for Indian expatriates residing in the UAE. Beginning October 28, 2025, all applications for Indian passports and renewals will be processed exclusively through the new Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0 portal — mportal.passportindia.gov.in.
This update also marks the official rollout of chip-enabled e-passports for Indian citizens in the UAE, enhancing document security, global recognition, and convenience.
What’s New: Chip-Enabled e-Passports
The newly introduced e-passports feature an embedded electronic chip that securely stores biometric and personal data of the holder. This move brings India in line with global passport security standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ensuring smoother immigration checks and reducing the risk of identity fraud.
Officials confirmed that applications made through the new portal will automatically be issued as chip-embedded passports, replacing the traditional booklets previously in circulation.
New Application Process
From October 28 onwards, all Indian nationals in the UAE must:
- Register and apply online through the new portal – mportal.passportindia.gov.in
- Upload ICAO-compliant photographs, signatures, and supporting documents digitally before their appointment.
- Book an appointment at the designated BLS International service centre for biometric verification and submission.
- Visit the service centre with original documents for final processing.
The Embassy emphasized that the previous passport portal will no longer accept new applications. Any forms initiated earlier must be resubmitted via the new site.
Benefits for Indian Expats
- Enhanced security: The microchip stores biometric data, reducing forgery and duplication risks.
- Faster processing: Pre-uploaded documents and improved verification systems reduce wait times at service centres.
- Global compatibility: E-passports comply with international standards, allowing seamless travel through automated e-gates.
- Modernized user experience: The new system introduces an upgraded interface with better tracking, notifications, and self-service options.
Embassy Statement
According to the Embassy of India, “This transition to the new Passport Seva Programme 2.0 will ensure faster processing, increased transparency, and improved service delivery to Indian nationals in the UAE.”
The initiative is part of India’s broader digital transformation efforts to modernize consular services for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
Important Reminder
Applicants are advised to:
- Use only the official website (mportal.passportindia.gov.in) for all submissions.
- Ensure photos and signatures meet the ICAO standards to avoid application delays.
- Check the latest passport fee structure and available appointment slots before visiting service centres.
- Verify Tatkaal (urgent) passport procedures under the new system if applying for emergency travel.
